What Is DHEA-S & Why Does It Matter?
When we talk about hormone health, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone usually get most of the attention. But DHEA-S can provide another important piece of the puzzle.
DHEA-S (dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate) is an androgen produced primarily by the adrenal glands. It also serves as a precursor your body can use to produce hormones including testosterone and estrogen. Because DHEA-S remains relatively stable in circulation, it can be a useful marker when evaluating adrenal androgen production.
DHEA-S levels are highest in early adulthood and naturally decline with age, which is why results should be interpreted based on age, sex, symptoms, and other hormone markers—not as an isolated number.
At Youthful You Aesthetics and Wellness, we look at the bigger picture. Depending on your symptoms, DHEA-S may be evaluated alongside testosterone, estradiol, SHBG, cortisol, and other labs.
